FIGARO TINTO CALATAYUD 2009, SPAIN
Figaro is 100% Garnacha, made from a selection of the best grapes grown in the oldest vineyards. While not truly an "oaked wine", a short stay in oak barrels provides a nice spicy flavor boost. Made at the Bodega Nino Jesus cooperative owned by some 150 grape growers. This 100 percent Garnacha is medium ruby in color, revealing fruity red plum aromas accented by vanilla coming from a short stay in oak barrels. Has a soft sweet attack of raspberry and very ripe plum fruit with a touch of vanilla spice. Although not very complicated, this is an honest, pleasing wine, and a good value, too.
"Bright violet. Dark berry and cherry aromas show a jammy aspect. Supple and gently sweet, with good lift to its black raspberry and boysenberry flavors. Smooth and broad on the finish, leaving behind a hint of spiciness. Extremely easy to drink and an excellent value."

NIEL SANTOFIMIA RED 2011, SPAIN
(85% garnacha tintorera and 15% merlot, fermented in stainless steel and then aged for three months in older French oak): Opaque ruby. Black and blue fruits on the highly fragrant, smoke-accented nose. Juicy, penetrating blueberry and bitter cherry flavors display very good clarity and pick up sweetness and spiciness with air. Fine-grained tannins give shape and grip to the long, spicy finish. Superb value here.

LA MAIALINA CHIANTI 2009, ITALY
"The 2008 Chianti is a very serious wine for the money. The floral aromatics render an impression of accessibility but the darkness and richness of the fruit that follow hint at a far more important pedigree. Dark red berries, flowers and minerals add the final notes of complexity on the impressive finish. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014."

BODEGAS BRECA GARNARCHA DE FUEGO OLD VINES 2011, SPAIN
The 2011 Garnacha de Fuego, a 100% Grenache cuvee, was aged in both stainless steel and neutral French oak. There are 10,000 cases for the United States. This amazing wine boasts a dark ruby/purple color along with a sweet kiss of jammy black cherries intertwined with crushed rock notes that give the wine an undeniable minerality. As it hits the palate, a full-bodied, voluptuous texture takes hold and the flavor profile moves towards blacker fruits (ripe raspberries and black currants) intermixed with camphor and forest floor. This full-bodied, rich, glycerin-filled effort should drink well for 4-5 years, perhaps longer.

BURGO VIEJO RIOJA CRIANZA 2009, SPAIN
"The 2009 Crianza is even more interesting. A classic Rioja with lots of toasty oak intermixed with some white chocolate, black currant and cherry fruit, the vanillin from the barrels is part of the cedary, sweet perfume and fleshy flavor this wine imparts. A blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, it is deep ruby-colored and medium to full-bodied, with a very supple texture. It is obviously made to be consumed over the next 2-4 years."

VINA EGUIA RIOJA CRIANZA 2008, SPAIN
"I was immensely impressed by the two wines that I tasted from
Bodegas Eguia, located in the Alavesa subregion in the village of Elciego. The company was founded in 1982 by Julian Murua,
who resurrected his fathers winery, which had been established
in the 1920s. They both represent outstanding value." - Robert Parker
"The 2008 Vina Eguia Crianza is aged in American oak for 12
months. It offers a crisp, natural bouquet of dark berries, burnt toast and singed leather. The palate is very well balanced, with lithe tannins that caress the mouth. The oak is seamlessly integrated towards the lingering, supple finish. This is a very wellcrafted, natural Rioja."

NORTH BY NORTHWEST RIESLING 2011, WASHINGTON
Golden straw in color with aromas of peach, jasmine, clover, paper whites, and graham cracker. The flavors consist of apricot, mango, lychee, lemon meringue, and citrus. On the palate it is crisp, round, long finish, balanced with dry acidity.
"Quite tart and bone dry, this is made from fruit sourced from the Wallula Benches Vineyarda site also prominently featured in Pacific Rims Riesling lineup. Racy and gin-like in its flavor profile, it emphasizes botanical and citrus notes, with good penetration and length."
