THE ROYAL CHENIN BLANC 2009, SOUTH AFRICA
Here is a lively, refreshing, dry white from South Africa that also happens to be an excellent bargain. Made from 100% Chenin Blanc, the most planted variety in South Africa, it has a slight resemblance to French Vouvray which is made from the same grape variety. There is a vivid, fruity nature to this wine with flavors of tropical fruit, green apple and citrus counterbalanced by refreshing, tangy acidity. It is just a terrific all-purpose white! Enjoy well-chilled as a lovely crisp glass on its own but ideal for al fresco dining and with light summer fare. Beautiful with salads, anti pasta and seafood.

The Royal 2009 Old Vines Steen (another name for the South African Chenin Blanc grapes), is sourced from 48 year-old vines in the Swartland wine growing region of South Africa is one of the most lovely, and universally drinkable South African wines that we've tasted at anywhere close to the price.

We would have guessed that this wine was French because the mineral quality of the wine and the lovely honeysuckle flavors are much more reminiscent of a French Chenin Blanc than a South African one. The stone fruit and honey overtones of the palate are absolutely lovely, as is the creamy mouthfeel.

This wine is so vibrant, it's aromas pretty much fly out of the glass - tropical fruits like pineapple, ruby red grapefruit, lime zest, guava, gooseberries (what is a gooseberry? kind of like a fuzzy, tart little grape), and a crisp, tangy finish with notes of green apple and honeysuckle. Fresh, lean, crisp, breezy and charming! It hints more towards the French Vouvray style of Chenin Blanc than anything else, meaning that it is not over-the-top with its fruit characteristic, instead just offering them up gracefully. You really cant go wrong with this wine - its an amazing value and a perfect sipper that will should be your house white. Buy it by the case as this is a great value and a delicious white. Wine Spectator 88 Pts    ON SALE - $ 8.98
