FRIDAY HAPPY HOUR FEATURING A SPANISH "WINE FLIGHT"

Karen Klemow of Finewine.com has selected four great Spanish wines for a fun flight of 1 white, 1 rose, and 2 red wines for a Friday evening special.  These are four of our Spanish favorites, representing four classic Spanish categories: an Albarino, a Rosado (Rosé), a Monastrell, and a Toro (Tempranillo).  We'll start with one of our long-time standards, Nessa Albarino from Adegas Grand Vinum- a perfect example of this crisp Spanish white from far northwestern Spain.  Next, we'll go to Rioja for Carlos Serres' Rioja Rosado, a Rosé made from Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura- the latter one of the main grapes of Cava.  Then you'll sample two super-high-quality reds, starting with our current "Wine of the Week"Porta Regia's "12 Meses" Monastrell 2018.  This super red, detailed elsewhere in this newsletter, is worth the price of admission all by itself!  And finally, we'll sample another perennial favorite, Bodegas San Roman's "Prima" Toro, a super Tempranillo and long-time mainstay of our line-up of Spanish reds.   Come experience this amazing flight of wines for only $20!   The wines will also be available ‘by the glass’ so you can enjoy more of your favorite.

FREE SATURDAY TASTING- 5 MOSTLY ITALIAN WINES WITH OUR FAVORITE ITALIAN WINE EXPERT!

Join Nick Matarese of Siema as he pours 5 wines (most new to Finewine.com)!

SATURDAY, 1-4:30 PM

Finewine.com welcomes back Nick Matarese of Siema, our charming Ambassador of Italian wine and world-class raconteur, who will regale you with stories of Italy and its wines.  We'll offer FREE samples of five eclectic beauties, starting with a rare vintage cava that's new to Finewine.com, the 2017 Sumarocca Brut Cava.  This champagne-method sparkler will definitely leave you wanting more!  Then we'll quickly transition to Nick's fantastic Italian line-up, starting with a nice round Grechetto from Podere Barbi.  If you're unfamiliar with Grechetto, this is the world-class white grape best known as the grape of Orvieto.  We'll then cap the tasting with three red wines, starting with the Ca Del Bea Maniero Pinot Noir.  Pinot Noir from Italy?  Yes!  We found this "Pinot Nero" absolutely charming, and think you will as well.  Finally, we'll end with two more new entrants to the Finewine.com lineup.  The first is Barbi's "Cilegiolo", a beguiling grape with a musical name.  Cilegiolo's name comes from the Italian for 'cherry', and it is often a minor part of the Chianti blend.  Here it makes a rare starring appearance!  The tasting will conclude with the big, bold Brunetti Sangiovese, an unusually burly wine from the great grape of Tuscany.

Come out and enjoy this fantastic line-up!  As always you'll get at least 10% off all of the wines we taste!

Don't miss our next great wine tasting class:

The Wines of South America

October 13 & 14 @ 7PM

As many as 12 classic wines with light fare to complement them!

South America is a prolific source of great wine values, but also home to some truly distinctive wines that rank among the greatest in the world.  Malbec from Argentina's Mendoza region is immensely popular, and will be represented by some stellar examples in this class.  But there is much more to South American wine than Malbec, including rich Cabernet Sauvignons, world-class Bordeaux blends, classic varietals such as Tannat and Cabernet Franc, and lesser-known varietals well worth discovering, such as Bonarda and Torrontes.  In this class, we'll explore wines from the world-renowned wine regions of Argentina and Chile, but we'll also sample wines from off the beaten path, including from Uruguay and Brazil.  Ranging from the ultra-popular to the somewhat obscure, this class will be packed with can't miss wines that, well...you won't want to miss!

So join us in October for the next in our series of wine classes: “The Wines of South America”.  We’ll taste and compare as many as 12 classic wines, and we’ll offer some light hors d’oeuvres to complement the wines.  Tasting classes at Finewine.com are geared to both beginners and experienced wine aficionados alike, and this class will offer a little something for everyone.  So join the expert Finewine.com staff as we explore the often eclectic and sometimes spectacular wines of this innovative new world region.  Come taste, learn, discuss and enjoy!

This 92-pt oak-aged Spanish has it all: big, elegant, and affordable!

Porta Regia's 2018 Private Collection "12-Month" Monastrell is only $16.98!

"Dark ruby. Spice-accented dark berries, mocha and pungent flowers on the deeply perfumed nose. Appealingly sweet black and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors become livelier and pick up a hint of vanilla with air. The blue fruit and floral notes repeat on the impressively long, penetrating finish, which features polished tannins and a hint of white pepper. Drink from 2022- 2028"— Vinous Media, 92 points

Oak aging is a key variable in the red wines in Spain, and one of the keys to understanding a wine's character and quality.  In fact, oak is so central to today's feature wine that the "12 Meses" of the title advertises the wine's 12-month oak aging.  Porta Regia's 2018 Coleccion Privada Monastrell "12 Meses" is their top-of-the-line bottling, receiving the severest selection of grapes, plus that extended oak aging to enhance the wine's structure and character.  Yet even Porta Regia's best remains a fantastic bargain at our sale price of only $16.98!

If you are already a lover of Spanish reds, Porta Regia's 2018 Coleccion Privada Monastrell "12 Meses" is simply a great wine at a great price.  If you are not already familiar with what Spanish reds have to offer, then this is the perfect opportunity to see why this is such a popular category.  This Monastrell truly threads the needle- it's big but not overpowering, elegant but not light, structured but not overly tannic, oak-aged yet not overtly oaky, and highly-rated yet inexpensive!  We were impressed by the prior vintage of this wine, which we featured in the midst of last year's shut-downs.  We're thrilled to say that the 2018 vintage is every bit as good as its well-rated predecessors, and already shows plenty of complexity and character.  But this wine has years of life ahead of it, and a year or two more in bottle will only enhance its luster.  So stock up now for current consumption and cellaring, while we maintain our Wine of the Week sale price of just $16.98!  Call 301-987-5933 or order online NOW.
