The cultivation of Mencia in Spain probably dates to Roman times, yet its taste seems quite modern. The Luna Beberide offers as pure and bright an expression as you'll find- redolent of classic "blue fruits", with echoing chimes of blueberry, blackberry and black cherry, plus reverberations of cedar, Mencia is a distinctive grape that grows only on the Iberian peninsula, and the best approach the quality of Burgundian Pinot Noir. Like a top red Burgundy, a quality Mencia can be remarkably long-lived for a medium-weight red, and as we've said before, if you love Pinot Noir and other aromatic reds (such as Gamay), then Mencía could be right up your proverbial alley. Luna Beberide's Mencía, from the region of Bierzo in northwestern Spain, is well-known to customers of Finewine.com, and with good reason- Mencia is Bierzo's signature red grape, and Luna Beberide one of its flagship producers. Today's feature is Beberide's fantastic 2018 Finca Luna Beberide Mencia, perhaps the greatest version of this wine yet produced. This captivating red captures Mencia at its fruity, mouth-watering, aromatic best, and the wine's pronounced character reflects its origins from 60-year-old vines, with their naturally low yields. The ratings on this beauty mirror our evaluation that this is one of the best Mencia's we've ever tasted in the under $40 price range! 
slate, espresso, a hint of smoke...you name it! And the whole palate is wrapped in a bright, juicy package that is mouthwatering even in recollection. The high ratings and evocative descriptions on this wine are many, so we'll quote from just one more; in rating the wine 93+ for View from the Cellar, John Gilman described it as showing "a lovely nose of black cherries, sweet dark berries, espresso, slate, tree bark, woodsmoke, smoked meats, cedar and a nice touch of graphite"..."on the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and complex, with lovely old vine creaminess at the core, superb mineral drive and grip, excellent focus and a long, suavely-tannic, complex and tangy finish."
