D'Arenburg's 2017 "Stump Jump" GSM Red:

#3 IN WINE ENTHUSIAST'S TOP-100 BEST BUYS OF 2021!

"Ripe, fleshy blueberries and raspberries drive this red blend without too much oak getting in the way. There's an underbelly of flowers, cinnamon and peppery spice. The tannins are typically muscular, while the fruit is juicy, silky and fresh.  #3 BEST BUY OF 2021" - Wine Advocate: 91 points

Today's feature wine is an Australian red blend well-known for the value it delivers vintage after vintage (as well as for its whimsical label...about which more later).  But while D'Arenburg's "Stump Jump" GSM blend is always a fantastic value, the 2017 vintage is something special- probably the best ever of this classic Rhone-style blend (46% Grenache, 42% Shiraz, 12% Mourvedre) from the McLaren Vale region of South Australia.  The 2017 is a value so remarkable that it landed all the way up at #3 on Wine Enthusiast's Best Buy list of 2021!!   This is one of the great wine bargains in the world, especially at our current Sale Price of only $14.98!

D'Arenburg is one of the best-known producers in McLaren Vale (south of Adelaide), and in addition to a super stable of wines, they also feature perhaps the most iconic piece of Australian architecture other than the Sydney Opera House.  The "d'Arenburg Cube" is the centerpiece of their vineyard holdings, a building designed in the form of a Rubic's Cube that hosts wine education, wine tastings, restaurants, and an all-purpose visitor experience.  Now...about that label- the phrase "Stump Jump" refers to a specially designed plow capable of jumping over tree roots.  Rumor is that the inventor of that plow had such poor eyesight that he required regular tests to ensure he could still safely operate machinery.  The label is therefore in the form of an eye chart, and it doubles as a makeshift sobriety test: if you can hold the bottle at arm’s length and still read the front label, you can enjoy another glass!

But back to the wine!  D'Arenburg's description does it full justice: "This wine screams value. A rich ruby red appearance with a fragrant nose of raspberry, a hint of dark cherry and spice. Silky texture on the palate, but with a juicy fruit core that shows plum, red berries, and a savory finish. There are lovely soft tannins and some slight acidity. The fruit weight and silkiness mean this wine can be enjoyed now, but it will keep developing over time."  This is as reliable and satisfying as wine gets at this modest price, and if you have enjoyed the red blends of France's Southern Rhone Valley (e.g., Cotes du Rhone, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Chateauneuf-du-Pape), then this "GSM" blend is for you!  And at our sale price of $14.98, you can impress your friends with a wine that tastes like it costs much more than it does- and check their eyesight as well!

November's wine class: "The Pinot Family: The First Family of Wine"

In the world of fine wine, “Pinot” starts familiar names such as Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio, and all grapes with the “Pinot” prefix are closely related.  These grapes form what we're calling the “First Family” of wine- a family that includes Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris (AKA, Pinot Grigio), and of course, Pinot Noir.  Pinot Noir is the acknowledged star, source of some of the great red wines in the world, but Pinot Noir’s lighter-skinned siblings produce great white wines in their own right.  We’ll explore these great grapes, with examples from regions as disparate as France’s Burgundy and Alsace, America’s Willamette Valley, and Italy’s Alto Adige.  We’ll also offer light hors d’oeuvres to complement the wines.  Classes at Finewine.com are for beginners and experts alike, so join the expert Finewine.com staff as we explore the fantastic Pinot family of grapes!        https://www.finewine.com/topics/Wines-Of-Bordeaux-g3410764gy

2021 BEAUJOLAIS NOUVEAU ROLL-OUT!!

Finca Luna Beberide Mencia 2018: This 95-point Mencia is an Instant Classic!

"(Shows) purity, intensity and stored energy...tastes of game fresh from the hunt, astonishingly red, sunny, savory and spicy. The fruit recalls dark sour cherries and rose petals, with a beautiful bitterness that feels directly tied to the slate in the soil. Exciting to drink, especially with grilled game sausages."  -Wine & Spirits: 95 points
"The aromatic, floral, elegant and subtle 2018 Finca Luna Beberide was love at first sight. From its bright purple color denoting youth to its intoxicating nose and the purity like no other vintage before, it really captivated me. It was produced with Mencía from 60-year-old vines in Villafranca del Bierzo and has unprecedented finesse and elegance. The palate is juicy, fresh and refined, but with energy and light, very clean and focused. This is drop-dead gorgeous. One to buy by the case at this price!" - Wine Advocate: 92 points
