Starting at 5 PM this Friday, we will pour FREE samples of several wines!  We might sample the Wine of the Week if it's still available, or anything else that tickles our fancy...but whatever we choose, we'll reduce the bottle price by at least 10% and we'll offer the same wines by the glass at our bar through the evening.  Join us this Friday for a little Finewine.com cheer!

FREE (MOSTLY) FRENCH WINE TASTINGSATURDAY, 29 JANUARY, 1-4:30 PM

FOUR SUPER FRENCH WINES, PLUS A FAVORITE SPANISH RIOJA!!

This Saturday afternoon, Clemence Rousseau (note the authentic French name!) of Elite Wines will pour four high-quality favorites from France, home of many of the world's greatest wines, plus a bonus favorite from Spain's Rioja region.  We'll start with Nore Chardonnay, a Languedoc Chard that offers super value and clean, dry fruit flavors.  Domaine Chaume-Arnaud Cotes du Rhone Rouge, and Danielle Vialard & Eric Hosteins' Pays d'Herauly Syrah de la Chapelle follow, a classic red blend from the Rhone Valley and a lovely Syrah from southern France, respectively.  Then we'll go in a slightly more exotic direction when we sample a Corbieres from Fontareche.  Corbieres is one of the most important appellations in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, and this wine will show you why!  Finally, we'll end with an old Spanish favorite, Vina Real's Rioja Crianza 2016.  We'll see if it can hold its own against the French competition!  Join us Saturday for this super line-up!  And as always, all of these wines will be on sale all day Saturday!

THIS GREAT RHONE BLEND GETS 2.5 STARS FROM THE POST!

2020 DOMAINE BERTHET-RAYNE COTES-DU-RHONE: REDUCED TO ONLY $17.98 THIS WEEK!!

"We’re seeing more of this style of wine, and thank goodness: Excellent quality fruit, well-tended in the vineyard and minimally processed in the winery with little oak influence, and released less than a year after the vintage. Simple, straightforward and delicious. This CdR still packs a punch — exuberant up-front fruit, with cherry and berry flavors, some wild herbs characteristic of the Rhône, and soft, ripe tannins to carry it home. Savor this now or in the next few years with hearty roasts or grilled meats. Organic."  - Dave McIntyre, Washington Post- 2 1/2 Stars (Excellent/Extraordinary)

It's stating the case too strongly to say that Cotes-du-Rhone is the Rodney Dangerfield of fine wine, but we often take Cotes-du-Rhone's excellence and often great value for granted.  Today's Wine of the Week is a reminder of why Cotes-du-Rhone (or "CDR" for short) should command our respect.  Domaine Berthet-Rayne's 2020 Cotes-du-Rhone is a beauty of a wine that is reminiscent of the super reds produced in higher-priced Rhone appellations.  Yet this CDR has a super price-to-quality ratio- especially this week, when we have reduced our regular price of $19.99 to a sale price of only $17.98!

This super CDR is a quintessential Grenache-predominant Southern Rhone blend, in this case 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 15% Carignan, 5% Cinsault.  The "Rhone Blend" is one of the world's most successful grape blends, so much so that versions of the blend appear far from France's Rhone Valley.  Variations on the blend are seen throughout the Languedoc and Rousillon regions of southern France, but also on California's Central Coast, in South Africa's Cape Region, and in South Australia, under the common shorthand "GSM" (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre).  Grenache is the signature grape of the Southern Rhone and the star of the Berthet-Rayne blend, and the wine reflects its characteristic red fruit, berry-like flavors, leafy-herbal hints, and modest tannins.

Domaine Berthet-Rayne's 2020 Cotes-du-Rhone is a super-refreshing, beautifully balanced wine that is readily receptive to food, and it performs a fine wine balancing act in that it is both substantial, yet light on its feet at the same time.  With Medium acidity and restrained tannins, this CDR will pair nicely with a broad range of foods (one of the reasons why Finewine.com staff often recommend a CDR when presented with a difficult to pair dish).  Berthet-Rayne's CDR can definitely complement big, rich, meaty winter fare without being overwhelmed, but it also marries well with poultry preparations or lighter dishes with flavorful sauces.  Despite our current inflationary cycle, this lovely red blend remains a super bargain at our sale price of only $17.98!

JUST BACK IN STOCK!!!!

EVERYONE LOVES THIS 91-PT RED BLEND!!: 2019 SILK & SPICE PORTUGUESE RED BLEND IS STILL ONLY $12.98!!

"This powerful, rich wine is succulently packed with black fruits. With its balance already assured between its spicy edge and silky tannins, the wine is ready to drink now.  BEST BUY."  - Wine Enthusiast: 91 pts
