GREAT GRAPE, GREAT WINE, GREAT PRICE

2019 "GENERATION 1905" GRENACHE: A SUPER FRENCH RED FOR ONLY $14.98!!

"The nose delivers red cherry and cranberry alongside a white pepper accent. Juicy red fruit is echoed on the palate that's loaded with bouncy acidity and gentle tannins. A blanket of vanilla and white pepper marks the close." - Wine Enthusiast: 90 points, BEST BUY
"Number six wine bargain of the Year 2021."  Dave McIntyre, Washington Post, 2.5 Stars (Excellent/Extraordinary)

Grenache is best known as the premiere grape of France's Southern Rhone Valley, where it stars in such famous appellations as Vacqueyras, Gigondas, and Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  But Grenache can produce great wine (and great value) outside the Rhone, including in its native Spain and in the Languedoc-Rousillon region of Southern France.  At its best, the grape is a perfect answer to the question "What reasonably priced red wine can appeal to beginners and experienced wine aficionados alike?"  Exhibit A is the 2019 Generation 1905 Grenache, a bargain-priced and approachable southern French red with easy charm, but also a wine that rewards closer examination.  This Grenache is beautifully characteristic of what the grape has to offer, and at our sale price of only $14.98, this super red delivers extreme value- hence its selection as the Washington Post's #6 Wine Bargain of 2021!

As mentioned above, Grenache is actually native to Spain, where it produces some truly great values under the "Garnacha" name.  But today's feature wine is proof that the grape can produce fantastic value in its adoptive home of France.  We loved this wine when we first tasted it, and weren't surprised to see the Washington Post's Dave McIntyre award the wine 2.5 Stars ("Excellent/Extraordinary"), saying "The label suggests a simple country wine, a vin de France, designed to fill a price gap created by the recent rise in Côtes-du-Rhône reds. But (this) surprisingly nuanced wine....caught my attention with the second or third sip, and seized my imagination by the fifth."

As noted by Dave McIntyre, Generation 1905 Grenache fills a price niche that has been mostly vacated by many of the wines traditionally offering top value at this price range, including most Cotes du Rhones.  While the best Cotes du Rhone (like last week's feature wine) still provides great value, the discovery of this beautiful Grenache from southern France comes at an opportune moment, as inflation raises the baseline cost of wines across the board.  So take advantage of this lovely world-class red while it lasts.  True value still exists, especially at our bargain sale price of only $14.98!

THIS GREAT RHONE BLEND GETS 2.5 STARS FROM THE POST!

2020 DOMAINE BERTHET-RAYNE COTES-DU-RHONE: REDUCED TO ONLY $17.98!

"We’re seeing more of this style of wine, and thank goodness: Excellent quality fruit, well-tended in the vineyard and minimally processed in the winery with little oak influence, and released less than a year after the vintage. Simple, straightforward and delicious. This CdR still packs a punch — exuberant up-front fruit, with cherry and berry flavors, some wild herbs characteristic of the Rhône, and soft, ripe tannins to carry it home. Savor this now or in the next few years with hearty roasts or grilled meats. Organic."  - Dave McIntyre, Washington Post- 2 1/2 Stars (Excellent/Extraordinary)
