FREE SPANISH WINE TASTING: FRIDAY, 11 FEB, 5-7 PM

FREE Friday wine tasting returns this Friday evening, as Michael Anez of Grapes of Spain pours four Spanish favorites.  A super champagne-method cava, Cygnus 1+1=3 Brut, leads the parade- a wine whose quality far exceeds its mathematical accuracy.  Solarce's Rioja Rosado (rose) follows; this rose provides a deliciously different take on Rioja.  Next we taste one of the great bargains in the world of fine wine- Legado del Moncayo's Vendimia Seleccionada Garnacha- an astonishing value at a very modest price.  We'll close with a classic Elias Mora's Toro a first-rate Tempranillo from the small region known for producing some of the biggest and most powerful reds in Spain.

FREE ITALIAN WINE TASTINGSATURDAY, 12 JANUARY, 1-4:30 PM

NICK MATARESE OF SIEMA WILL POUR FIVE SUPER WINES!!

One of our favorite wine partners, Nick Matarese of Siema, will share five wines from his extensive Italian portfolio for FREE tasting this Saturday afternoon.  These five wines represent Italy from top to bottom, from the Veneto in the north to Basilicata in the south.  We'll start with La Cappuccina Soave, a Veneto white that's a fantastic value, then we'll sample a lightly sweet red (and perfect pizza wine) from Emilia-Romagna: Casa Bella's Lambrusco.  We'll then transition to three distinctive dry red wines, starting with Volpetti's Cesanese, an approachable and winning red from Lazio that's a longtime customer favorite.  Next comes Il Ruspo Sangiovese, a rare Sangiovese from Umbria in central Italy.  Finally, we'll taste our current Wine of the Week, the superb I Sassi Aglianico del Vulture.  We guarantee that you'll love this big, delicious red from Basilicata in south-central Italy!

So join us Saturday for these wines spanning the length of the Italian peninsula!  As always, all tasting wines will be on sale all day Saturday!

Villa Jolanda's "I Love You" Prosecco is in stock: Both 750 ml and 187 ml sizes!

The bottle is gorgeous, but Villa Jolanda Prosecco is a classic Italian sparkler with a characteristic bouquet of ripe apple and a scent of acacia, making it super as an aperitif and perfect for hors d`oeuvres and even main courses.  This is all about freshness- the grapes are hand-harvested, chilled in the vineyard, and given a low-temperature fermentation in stainless steel.  And yes, the bottle screams: "I Love You"!

THE "EXPERTS" HAVEN'T RATED THIS WINE, BUT WE LOVE IT!!

I Sassi Aglianico del Vulture 2017/2018: A great red from southern Italy!

"The color is more or less intense ruby red verging on garnet with aging.  Typical varietal scent of wild berries.  The taste is dry, full, with lively tannins when young, it becomes rounder with aging and reaches an exceptional harmony after a few years."

Mt. Vulture is a majestic landmark in the Basilicata region of southern Italy, an extinct volcano reminiscent of its more famous (and considerably less extinct!) counterpart in Campania, Mt. Vesuvius.  Unsurprisingly, Mt. Vulture is surrounded by volcanic soil, the product of ancient lava flows and volcanic ash, and this unique soil is essential to the cultivation of one of the world's best little-known grapes: Aglianico.  Today's feature wine is a superb example of this underappreciated gem, I Sassi's Aglianico del Vulture.  Don't let the lack of professional ratings on I Sassi fool you; this is a superb example of a classic grape, and a wine that tastes as if it costs far more than our sale price of only $18.48!

Aglianico (pronounced "ah-L’YEE’AH-nee-koh") has definitely stood the test of time- in fact, it may be the oldest commercially promoted grape in the world, likely used to make the Falernian wine famed during Roman times.  In Native Wine Grapes of Italy,” Ian d’Agata asserts of Aglianico: “Along with Nebbiolo and Sangiovese, it is generally believed to be one of Italy’s three best wine grapes, but in my opinion, it is far more: At the very least, it’s one of the world’s dozen or so best wine grapes.”  That's quite a claim, but after tasting I Sassi's Aglianico you'll agree: the structure, character, and age-worthiness of Aglianico in general (and I Sassi in particular) promote comparisons with Nebbiolo and Cabernet Sauvignon.  Aglianico is frequently compared with Nebbiolo, the famous grape of Barolo and Barbaresco in northwest Italy, hence the moniker “the Barolo of the South”.  This well-intended comparison is high praise, but it may inadvertently obscure Aglianico by conferring a junior-partner, little-brother status on a grape that can stand on its own as unique and great in its own right.

We love Aglianico, and we love the Aglianico from I Sassi -a perfect pairing of grape and terroir.  Very few wine regions are near active, dormant, or extinct volcanoes, but those that are feature grapes like Aglianico, specifically suited to the unique soil.  Volcanic soil promotes distinct wines with pronounced acidity and savory, mineral characteristics.  I Sassi displays these elements, plus Aglianico's characteristic full-bodied warmth, firm tannins, and excellent aging potential.  The rich flavors make this wine perfect for pairing with big, hearty, meaty meals, plus those featuring the traditional ingredients of southern Italy- San Marzano tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, succulent olives, pasta, olive oil, capers, garlic, and dishes accented with heartier seafood.  Some combination of these ingredients could make a heavenly match with this Aglianico's earthy, brooding fruit.  While capable of aging for 5-10 more years, the 2017 I Sassi is drinking beautifully right now.  We definitely rate this wine at or above 90 points, but don't take our word for it- try it for yourself at our bargain sale price of only $18.48!
