FREE FRENCH WINE TASTING: SATURDAY, 19 FEBRUARY 1-4:30 PM

Rob Garretson of Global Wines (and formerly of Finewine.com) will share four wines from his super French portfolio for FREE tasting this Saturday afternoon.  These four wines represent different facets of what la Belle France has to offer.  We'll start with Chateau la Roverterie Sauvignon Blanc, a rare white Bordeaux made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc.  And then, since rose season really isn't that far away, we'll sample one of our favorite dry Provence roses- Pampelonette's Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence Rose.  We'll then transition to red wines, beginning with Jacques Depagneux's "Cuvée Annie" Vieilles Vignes Beaujolais-Villages- an old vine, Village-level Beaujolais that climbs high up the quality charts with its rich dark-cherry character.  Finally, we'll taste a favorite Bordeaux Rouge, Chateau Beausejour Fronsac.  This beautiful red hails from Fronsac, a "right-bank" appellation offering great value in a classic Merlot-predominant Bordeaux blend.

So join us Saturday for these wines that show the glory of France!  As always, all tasting wines will be on sale all day Saturday!

This soul-satisfying Tuscan red is highly rated and affordable!

91-point-rated Castello Banfi Chianti Classico 2019 on sale for $16.98!

"Pure flavors of strawberry and cherry are the hallmarks of this expressive Chianti Classico, with earth, wild herb and tobacco accents adding depth as this firms up on the lingering finish. Sangiovese, Canaiolo Nero and Cabernet Sauvignon." -Wine Spectator,  91 points

Chianti is a long-time favorite of wine lovers, especially Chiantis bearing the "Classico" designation- meaning they come from that part of the appellation producing the highesdt-quality fruit.  Of course, the world of fine wine has proven to be no more immune to price inflation than other elements of the world economy, and the price of the best Chiantis has risen along with everything else.  Finding a highly-rated Classico for under $20 is far harder than it used to be, but this week we've found a great example from perhaps Tuscany's most famous producerCastello BanfiBanfi's 2019 Chianti Classico sports a rating of 91 points from the tough raters at Wine Spectator, and a sale price this week of only $16.98!

Chianti is produced in 8 distinct parcels throughout central Tuscany, but only the oldest, original Chianti region produces Chianti Classico.  However, provenance alone is insufficient to merit the Classico designation- there are many additional standards that must be met to achieve "DOCG" status.  One requirement for Chianti is the grape blend; all Chianti must be at least 80% Sangiovese, and Banfi's great Classico is no exception, with only modest amounts of the native Canaiolo Nero grape, plus a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon to boost the blend's richness and depth.  Banfi says this Classico "embodies all the characteristics that have made this wine an enduring classic: an alluring bouquet of black fruit and violets; rich flavors of cherry and leather; supple tannins and good acidity for dining."  Wine Spectator's 91 point rating verifies that their description is spot-on!

Chianti Classico is just one of those wines- like an old friend whose presence is both familiar and comforting.  But while broadly appreciated, many of us seem to take its excellence for granted.  The best Chianti Classicos are super-high-quality, approachable yet distinctive, broadly appealing to both connoisseurs and beginners, and perfect for pairing with many of your favorite foods- and Castello Banfi's 2019 Chianti Classico is certainly one of the best!   Sometimes the best wines (and the best bargains) are hiding in plain sight!  Take advantage now while we maintain our Wine of the Week price of just $16.98!  Call 301-987-5933 or order online NOW.

I Sassi Aglianico del Vulture 2017/2018: A great red from southern Italy!

Mt. Vulture is a majestic landmark in the Basilicata region of southern Italy, an extinct volcano reminiscent of its more famous (and considerably less extinct!) counterpart in Campania, Mt. Vesuvius.  Unsurprisingly, Mt. Vulture is surrounded by volcanic soil, the product of ancient lava flows and volcanic ash, and this unique soil is essential to the cultivation of one of the world's best little-known grapes: AglianicoI Sassi's Aglianico del Vulture is a super example of this under-appreciated gem!  And don't let the lack of professional ratings on I Sassi fool you: this is a superb example of a classic grape, and a wine that tastes as if it costs far more than our sale price of only $18.48!
