FREE SPANISH WINE TASTING- 5 GREAT WINES!

SATURDAY, 12 MARCH, 1-4:30 PM!!

Michael Anez of Grapes of Spain visits Finewine.com on Saturday for a FREE Spanish wine tasting!  We'll start with one of the great bargains of Spanish white wine- Egeo's Rueda Verdejo.  This fresh white is a bargain at its regular price, and a steal when 10% off!  We'll follow that with one of our favorite Spanish roses- Rosa de Arrocal, a rare rose made from 100% Tempranillo.  We'll follow with three reds each from a different (classic) Spanish region- Rioja, Ribera-del-Duero and Toro!  First comes a smooth and delicious rojo- Casa la Rad's "Solarce" Rioja.  Next we'll dial up the intensity a bit with a somewhat bigger red, Arrocal's Ribera-del-Duero- another wine based on the great Tempranillo grape.  Finally, we'll end with another Tempranillo- and one of our favorite wines in the world- the 2018 Prima Toro.  The heat of the Toro region gives full expression to the big, rich side of Tempranillo!  So join us for this great line-up of wines- and as always, you'll get 10% off all tasting wines not already on sale!

And how better to showcase these wines than by pairing them with the cuisine of their native Spain?  Enter celebrity chef and humanitarian José Andrés, who established a Bethesda-based offshoot of the casual Spanish Diner that has been such a critical success in New York City.  Billed as Andrés’s “Iberian take of the classic American all-day restaurant,” Spanish Diner is an ideal setting for a superb six-course menu designed to show both food and wine to best effect.  Isaac will provide the story behind the wines and share some secrets of the winemaker's art, and the wines you taste will also be available for purchase via Finewine.com at substantial discounts to their regular prices!

World-class Malbec- from its "Old World" home!

2018 CEDRE HERITAGE CAHORS MALBEC IS $18.48

"A rich, fruity and structured wine, this is full of black currant fruits. Its rich tannins are fully blended into the wine's intense fruitiness. Just the touch of minerality is a reminder that it is still aging." - Wine Enthusiast: 91 Points

We're conditioned to associate certain things: salt and pepper; peas and carrots; Malbec and Argentina.  The phrase "Argentinian Malbec" is one of the most familiar in wine, and Malbec from Argentina's Mendoza region is a crowd-pleaser.  But as with most grapes that flourish in South America, Malbec is actually native to France, and today's feature wine shows that great wine is still produced in the grape's "Old World" home!  Château du Cèdre's "Heritage" Cahors 2018 is a departure from the Argentinian style- and in this instance, vive la différence!  Malbec from Cahors is a different animal, and if you've never tasted a Cahors, this is the one to tryRated 91 points by Wine Enthusiast, this wine is French Malbec at its best, this week at a sale price of $18.98!

Malbec was once the most prevalent grape of southwest France (which includes Bordeaux), but it was susceptibile to cold and inconsistent in yield, and utilization fell sharply after a severe 1956 freeze.  However, the grape still thrives in the micro-climate and limestone-laced terroir of nearby Cahors.  Cahors Malbecs are usually more tannic and darker in character than their Argentine cousins; descriptions include references to blackberry, licorice, raisins, herbs and plums (Argentine Malbec is usually softer, plusher, less tannic).  Cahors wines are at least 70 percent Malbec, supplemented with Merlot and/or Tannat, but Château du Cèdre's "Heritage" Cahors has only a small amount of Merlot in the blend.  Château du Cèdre calls Heritage "a pure product of Cahors, made of Malbec complemented by some bunches of Merlot", and describes it as of "upright and welcoming character" with "an intense and fresh nose, with blackcurrant, wild pepper and mint."  And it is delicious!

If you enjoy Malbec from Argentina, you really should try Château du Cèdre's Heritage 2018!  This great example of French Malbec shows what the world loves about the grape while staying true to its French roots.  The Heritage bottling has been our biggest-selling French Malbec for years, and the 2018 vintage is the highest-rated Heritage in nearly a decade.  To truly understand this ultra-popular grape, you really should taste its traditional French incarnation- you just might prefer it to the Argentine version!  This great Malbec is perfect for the season, and at our sale price of only $18.98, perfect for anyone who appreciates a great bargain!

This 95-pt rouge is the next great bargain Red Bordeaux!!

2019 CHATEAU BOURDIEU "NO. 1" BLAYE COTES DE BORDEAUX IS A STEAL AT ONLY $18.98!!!

"Pristine definition of pure and driving damson, cherry and plum, with understated vanilla oak. Deep and long, the palate reveals a cascade of fleshy black fruits over ripe, fine-grained tannins and fruit-bonded acidity. Lovely stuff." - Decanter, 95 points
