A GREAT VALUE IN RED BORDEAUX!

2019 CHÂTEAU NICOT IS A SUPER BARGAIN AT ONLY $16.98!

"Château Nicot is composed of 60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. It reveals aromas of black berry and cherry subtly intermixed with floral notes of violets. The wine offers a great purity on the palate, followed by fine and silky tannins and a long and mineral finish." - Wine Enthusiast: 91 Points

In an age of cost pressure, the search for a genuine bargain in Bordeaux Rouge is as difficult as ever.  Shipping costs in particular are adding substantially to wine prices, and sticker shock is a daily occurrence.  And yet...Red Bordeaux is just too good to forego!  It's a classic for several reasons: it's one of the world's most reliable wines- it travels well and provides remarkably hearty consistency; it's the world's most successful red blend, featuring some of the world's great grapes in differing combinations; it pairs beautifully with rich, hearty dishes such as lamb, beef, and strongly flavored or aged cheeses; and it's the world's most collectible wine due to its structure, consistency and ageability.  Not yet convinced?  Try Château Nicot 2019, this week's wine of the week!  At our sale price of only $16.98, this is a world-class Bordeaux value!

To find a Bordeaux bargain, it helps to seek out hidden gems among the large number of lesser-known producers- similar to buying a modestly-priced home in an expensive neighborhood.  Today's example is Château Nicot, a small and relatively little-known Bordeaux property located at Ecoussans, a town on the right bank of the River Garonne, roughly 21 miles southeast of the city of Bordeaux. For over two centuries it has been in the hands of the Dubourg family, which now has a total of some 210 acres of vines covering nine different Bordeaux appellations, including some just over the river at Cadillac and in Sauternes.  The vineyards at Château Nicot remain the core of the family's holdings, with the 38 acres of vines- made up of two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Merlot- averaging 20 years of age.  It is these vines that give Château Nicot its unexpected depth!

Though still young, the 2019 Château Nicot is drinking beautifully now, yet is also capable of aging as with any high-quality Bordeaux.  And just as this is a wine to be enjoyed now as well as in years to come, it's a great candidate both for special occasions and as an every day house red.  At our sale price of only $16.98, this is a wine to stock up on- for any occasion!

The Year's Hottest Rosé is Here!

WÖLFFER ESTATE "SUMMER IN A BOTTLE" COTES DE PROVENCE ROSÉ 2021

"Perfectly pale, this wine’s amazing aromas of tangerine, citrus, peach and oral notes lead to its lively, vibrant fruit and elegant finish with classic salinity. This rosé is pure and refreshing with great esprit and a wonderful structure and texture, making it amazingly versatile to be paired with food."

Our next great wine class: “The Wines of Austria”

Wednesday, April 20, 7 PM

Thursday, April 21, 7 PM

With special guest Klaus Wittauer, Austrian Wine Importer and former sommelier

Austria is the land of waltzes, strudel, the Sound of Music…and world-class wines, some obscure to American consumers.  These include white wines from the native Gruner Veltliner grape, as well as from Riesling, Pinot Gris (“Grauburgunder”) and Rotgipfler (it tastes better than it sounds).  There’s also Austrian red wine, including from Pinot Noir (“Blauburgunder”), Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, plus world-class rosé.  To navigate this unfamiliar terrain, Finewine.com welcomes wine merchant (and former sommelier) Klaus Wittauer, a driving force in introducing Americans to the wines of his home country.  Klaus will familiarize us with Austria’s wine regions and grapes, sharing a series of wines that are familiar in some ways, and unique in others!

So join the expert staff of Finewine.com for our April wine class- “The Wines of Austria”.  We’ll taste and compare at least 10 wines, with light hors d’oeuvres to complement.  Tasting classes at Finewine.com are geared to both beginners and wine aficionados alike, to those who want to learn more about wine, and those who just want to relax and enjoy.  So join us (and Klaus) as we explore some of the most beautiful wines of beautiful Austria- come taste, learn, discuss and enjoy!
