THE WASHINGTON POST'S #1 BARGAIN OF THE YEAR

PIONEIRO VINHO TINTO 2018 IS BACK!  BUT SUPPLIES ARE LIMITED

"Portugal should no longer surprise us with its value wines. And yet, this one gobsmacked me with the complexity it offers for this price. Boysenberry, blueberry, tobacco leaf and autumn leaves seemed to swirl in my glass, even on the first night. More impressively, the flavors developed and became increasingly intertwined over the next several days....this wine would make a great case purchase to be your house red for the first months of 2022."  Dave McIntyre, Washington Post: Exceptional (3 Stars)

Savvy consumers know that Portugal is home to some of the world's greatest wine bargains, including the well-known wines of Vinho Verde- but we think Portugal's greatest values actually come in the red blend category.  This was reinforced in January when the Washington Post's Dave McIntyre selected the 2018 Pioneiro Vinho Tinto as his #1 Wine Bargain of the Year for 2021.  At that time, our initial supply sold out in a single day, and we've been waiting since then to obtain as much more as we could.  Our additional supply has just arrived, but like before, while this super-bargain is now back in stock, it's anybody's guess as to how long it will stay that way.  And, while our cost for this wine has risen since January, we're holding the line on price and offering Pioneirio Red at the same remarkable sale price of only $11.98!!

Pioneiro Tinto is produced in the Setubal Peninsula wine region, just south of Lisbon, and benefits from the moderating influence of the Atlantic Ocean. The blend relies on a grape that most of you have never heard of- Castelao (or "Periquita"), a varietal grown almost exclusively in Portugal that achieves its greatest expression in the sandy soil and warmth of Setubal.  This blend is 60% Castelao, boosted with 30% Aragones (Tempranillo) and 10% Syrah, then aged for 5 months in French oak before release.  This brief barrel aging helps round out the tannins and add a modest spice element to the wine.  The result is simply terrific!

Pioneiro is the perfect all-purpose red, with a lovely, complex character of berries, spice, and a touch of leafy nuance.  And it's supremely adaptable!  Pair it with grilled and roasted meats.  Pair it with anything coming off of your grill.  Pair it with poultry, flavorful salads, and even rich, sauced fish dishes.  Serve it to guests as a winning red that appeals to just about every palate, from beginner to expert.  Or just use it as the perfect "solo sipper".  The one downside is that demand for this wine far outstrips supply, especially at our sale price of only $11.98- and this time there's no more where this came from!  SO DON'T DELAY- ACT NOW!

ONE OF THE GREAT WINE VALUES OF THE WORLD

2020 ALAMOS MALBEC IS ONLY $10.98!!!

"I find the 2020 Malbec to be really excellent, with ripe Malbec fruit, notes of violets and berries and a spicy twist. The palate is round and juicy, nicely textured, with plush tannins and a long finish. Delicious, and a bargain at that price." - Wine Advocate: 90+ Points

"Fresh-plum, blackberry and black-tea aromas. It’s medium-bodied with firm, powdery tannins and a flavorful, creamy finish." - James Suckling- 91 points

Our next great wine class: “The Wines of Austria”

Wednesday, April 20, 7 PM

Thursday, April 21, 7 PM

With special guest Klaus Wittauer, Austrian Wine Importer and former sommelier

Austria is the land of waltzes, strudel, the Sound of Music…and world-class wines, some obscure to American consumers.  These include white wines from the native Gruner Veltliner grape, as well as from Riesling, Pinot Gris (“Grauburgunder”) and Rotgipfler (it tastes better than it sounds).  There’s also Austrian red wine, including from Pinot Noir (“Blauburgunder”), Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, plus world-class rosé.  To navigate this unfamiliar terrain, Finewine.com welcomes wine merchant (and former sommelier) Klaus Wittauer, a driving force in introducing Americans to the wines of his home country.  Klaus will familiarize us with Austria’s wine regions and grapes, sharing a series of wines that are familiar in some ways, and unique in others!

So join the expert staff of Finewine.com for our April wine class- “The Wines of Austria”.  We’ll taste and compare at least 10 wines, with light hors d’oeuvres to complement.  Tasting classes at Finewine.com are geared to both beginners and wine aficionados alike, to those who want to learn more about wine, and those who just want to relax and enjoy.  So join us (and Klaus) as we explore some of the most beautiful wines of beautiful Austria- come taste, learn, discuss and enjoy!
