Austria is the land of waltzes, strudel, the Sound of Music…and world-class wines, some obscure to American consumers.  These include white wines from the native Gruner Veltliner grape, as well as from Riesling, Pinot Gris (“Grauburgunder”) and Rotgipfler (it tastes better than it sounds).  There’s also Austrian red wine, including from Pinot Noir (“Blauburgunder”), Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, plus world-class rosé.  To navigate this unfamiliar terrain, Finewine.com welcomes wine merchant (and former sommelier) Klaus Wittauer, a driving force in introducing Americans to the wines of his home country.  Klaus will familiarize us with Austria’s wine regions and grapes, sharing a series of wines that are familiar in some ways, and unique in others!
