FREE ITALIAN WINE TASTING FRIDAY, 29 APRIL, 5-7 PM

Stacey Daniels of Wide Roots visits Finewine.com for a FREE wine tasting on Friday, featuring five Italian favorites.  We'll start with that staple of Italian whites with a super-high-quality Pinot Grigio from far northern Italy, then follow with a rare Negroamaro rose from far southern Italy.  Then we'll taste two unique wines that are a contrast with most other Italian reds.  The first is a rare 8-Grape Rosso Blend from Piedmonte that isn't quite like anything else you've encountered.  Then we'll taste a rare "Nero de Troia" from Puglia.  And as always, you'll get 10% off all tasting wines not already on sale!

FREE CALIFORNIA WINE TASTING SATURDAY, 30 APRIL, 1-4:30 PM

Tracey Linck of Republic visits Finewine.com for a FREE California wine tasting on Saturday afternoon, featuring four benchmark wines from the West Coast.  First we'll taste a highly-rated Chardonnay from the Monterey Peninsula, then a rare Provence-style rose from northern California.  We'll then transition to two of our most popular new world red wines.  We'll start with the rich "Petite-Petit" blend of Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot, a unique California red.  And we'll finish with a super Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the wines from the amazing Austin Hope portfolio.  And as always, you'll get 10% off all tasting wines not already on sale!

CANTINA SOCIALE COOPERATIVA COPERTINO ROSSO 2012:

THIS AGED ROSSO IS AN AMAZING VALUE AT ONLY $18.98

"An intriguing red that's aging gracefully, with delicate notes of baked cherry and black fig fruit accented by dried thyme, incense and leather. Well-knit and focused, with light, silky tannins, this is still fresh thanks to orange peel acidity and the tang of minerally iron and salt notes. Drink now through 2027."- Wine Spectator, 90 points (March 2022)

When seeking reasonably-priced world-class wines, we look to wine regions that attract little attention from collectors and other deep-pocketed wine buyers.  One such region is the tiny southern Italian appellation of Copertino.  Rare is the wine aficionado familiar with Copertino, not because great wine isn't produced there, but rather because quality varies sharply, supplies are limited, and the attention of Italian wine lovers is naturally drawn to the big names of the north- Barolo, Brunello, etc.  Today's feature wine is a great example of the appellation with the additional appeal of being a rare well-aged red that's just coming to market.  Cantina Sociale Cooperativa's 2012 Copertina Riserva was just rated 90 pts by Wine Spectator in a March 2022 tasting, and our Finewine.com staff rated it identically on our own tasting this month.  And better yet, this week we're reducing our price of $22.99 to only $18.98- a tremendous bargain for a well-aged, highly-rated red!

Copertino is in the Puglia region in southeastern Italy, and known principally for red wines from the Negroamaro grape.  These wines can be tannic and high in alcohol- as you'd expect given the hot, dry climate.  Quality varies between producers, but today's wine is from one of the best- the Copertino Cooperative, established in 1935 by a group of visionary growers who pushed for higher quality wine from their native grapes.  They lowered vineyard yields and ensured meticulous attention to detail in the cellar, producing terroir-driven wines that ultimately led to the establishment of the Copertino appellation in 1976.  Today the cooperative has 300 members who grow mostly the traditional local varieties: Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera, and Primitivo.  Negroamaro is the region's premier grape and the dominant grape in Copertina Cooperative's 2012 Riserva, though a small amount of Malvasia Nera may also grace the blend.  The Cooperative describes the 2012 Riserva as "Ruby red with garnet hints. Intense, full, rich and ethereal aromas of blackberry, plum, Mediterranean vegetation, ripe fruit, and leather. Warm, rich and generous, with complex tones and flavors of almond and blackcurrant. Perfect for pizza, burgers, red sauce and meat pasta."

That this delicious red remains affordable at nearly 10 years of age is remarkable, and note that Wine Spectator's 90-point rating is not from some ancient tasting, but from just last month.  And our own tasting, in which we rated this wine 90+ points, was within the last month as well.  So the 2012 Copertino Riserva is that rarest of commodities- a well-aged red that demonstrates the complexity and depth of an aged wine, yet one that retain its youthful vigor, and is also affordable.  This wine has it all, and at our new sale price of only $18.98, this is a remarkable opportunity to obtain a great aged red at the price of a current release!

A FAVORITE ROSÉ AT A SUPER PRICE: BUT SUPPLY IS LIMITED!!

CAMBRIA'S "JULIA'S VINEYARD" PINOT NOIR ROSÉ 2021:

$25 AT THE WINERY- ONLY $17.98!!

"This Rosé of Pinot Noir has pronounced aromas of white peach, strawberry and citrus. The palate is medium-bodied, with balancing and refreshing acidity, leading to a finish that expresses watermelon and grapefruit. A summer favorite, perfect for brunch or a picnic."

"This rosé displays a beautiful bright pink color, with distinct aromas of strawberry, peach, and mild hints of citrus.  The wine greets your palate with a delightfully rich texture, fruity freshness that emphasizes the natural acidity of the Pinot Noir grape, and beautiful balance that carries through the expressive red-fruit finish.  Delightful!" - Karen Klemow & Larry Ciolorito- 91 points

JUST A LITTLE BIT LEFT: PIONEIRO VINHO TINTO 2018

THE WASHINGTON POST'S #1 BARGAIN OF THE YEAR IS BACK

"Portugal should no longer surprise us with its value wines. And yet, this one gobsmacked me with the complexity it offers for this price. Boysenberry, blueberry, tobacco leaf and autumn leaves seemed to swirl in my glass, even on the first night. More impressively, the flavors developed and became increasingly intertwined over the next several days....this wine would make a great case purchase to be your house red for the first months of 2022."  Dave McIntyre, Washington Post: Exceptional (3 Stars)
