Lugana is a tiny, little-known appellation at the southern edge of Lake Garda, where they grow a grape that has variously been called "Trebbiano di Soave", "Trebbiano di Lugana", "Vermentino", or more recently, by the historic name "Turbiana". While now known to be closely related to Vermentino, the grape appears to be genetically distinct and unique- just like the stunningly beautiful region from which it hails. The soil of Lugana and Lake Garda itself were shaped by massive glaciers, and the region is focused on that single grape variety, long considered the highest quality grape to go by some variant of the Trebbiano name. It was to rid the grape of associations with the ubiquitous Trebbiano that local producers in Lugana adopted the Turbiana name. This wine is 100% Turbiana from the Lugana region, all from the "San Benedetto" parcel on the south shore of Lake Garda. Pale lemon-green in color, San Benedetto Lugana offers appealing notes of peaches, citrus, bananas, and herbs, underscored by crisp acidity and supple body on the palate. And that's just what the 2018 Zenato delivers! Our tasting notes on this wine describe its utter charm: "Bright aromas of lemon peel, tangerine, peach and a touch of herbs are followed on the palate by notable depth and concentration, emphasizing flavors of lemon, spice, and a touch of almond. The finish is mouth-filling, long and crisp."
