This 90+ point Spanish White is an amazing bargain!

Rated 93 by WRO and 90 by Vinous, Mantel's 2020 Verdejo Blanco is just $13.98!!

"Light, bright straw. Meyer lemon, melon, white peach and a hint of succulent herbs on the perfumed nose. Silky and energetic in the mouth, offering focused citrus and pit fruit flavors that show good depth and back-end cut. The floral quality repeats on a long, lively finish sharpened by a jolt of juicy acidity." --Vinous, 90 points

When was the last time you walked into a wine store and asked for a Verdejo?  Let's be honest- Verdejo is not exactly a marquee grape, and is not widely known outside of devotees of Spanish wine.  Even among fans of Spanish wine, grapes such as Tempranillo and Albarino- to name only two- are far better known and appreciated.  We hope that today's feature wine will introduce some of you to this often-overlooked grape, a grape that can produce world-class wine in the right hands (about which more later).  If you don't know Verdejo, Mantel's Verjedo Blanco 2020 is a great introduction; it reflects the grape's exotic, somewhat tropical character, and it packs fantastic value into its modest price of only $13.98!

If you love Sauvignon Blanc, you really should try a Spanish VerdejoOne of the reasons for Verdejo's relative obscurity may be that, unlike Sauv Blanc, Verdejo cultivation is still limited to Spain, with virtually all production coming from the Rueda region of Castilla y Leon.  Like the most appealing Sauvignon Blancs, Verdejo is very aromatic; it also has an appealing tropical/citrus/herb/peach character, though it often displays more body than a typical Sauvignon Blanc.  So why is Verdejo so little appreciated?  One reason is that earlier Verdejo winemaking often promoted oxidation like in Sherry, sacrificing the grape's inherent freshness and complex appeal.  Today, however, night-time harvests, refrigerated processing, cold maceration, and fermentation in stainless steel have transformed Verdejo into an enormously appealing white that you really must discover!  In a very lengthy review that rated the wine 93 points, Wine Review Online described it as "Exceptionally good Verdejo...unusually impressive palate weight and a generously rounded mouthfeel", and View From the Cellar  described it as having "a ripe and vibrant bouquet of fresh lime, casaba melon, a lovely touch of green olive, a fine base of minerality, sea salts and a topnote of wild fennel."  This not only sounds delicious, it is!

Mantel's Verdejo Blanco is a great food wine due to its vibrant acidity and subtle hint of palate-cleansing bitterness.  Try it with fish tacos, lime chicken, carnitas, asparagus, tomatoes, olives, and greens with vinaigrette dressing.  Verdejo is all about freshness and liveliness, so this is not a wine for extended aging- but for the next year or two this will be absolutely delicious, and should gain a bit of complexity.  One of our long-standing goals at Finewine.com is to introduce wine consumers to new wines, wine grapes, and wine regions.  Verdejo from Rueda is a perfect example, something sure to appeal to lovers of fresh, crisp, food-friendly whites.  So broaden your horizons this week, and get a great bargain in the process!  Stop by the store, order online NOW or call 301-987-5933

A great Cabernet from down under!

2019 Ringbolt Cabernet Sauvignon: classic, highly rated (92 pts), and hard to find!

"Offers a concentrated mix of ripe berry and plum flavors, with black licorice, thick espresso, star anise, and dark chocolate flavors that add richness and complexity. Notes of eucalyptus and fresh loam linger on the finish, with appealingly plush, velvety tannins and a succulent richness.  Drink now through 2036." - Wine Spectator,  92 points

When we think of Australian reds, the first grape that comes to mind is Shiraz- the unofficial national grape of Australia.  But while not as widely recognized or exported, Cabernet Sauvignon is the second most cultivated wine grape in Australia- and the best Aussie Cabs are superb.  Today's great feature red, the 2019 Ringbolt Cabernet Sauvignon, is exhibit A for what Australian Cabs can achieve in the right setting.  And the Margaret River wine region in far southwestern Australia is absolutely the right setting for this rich Cab.  Its 92-point Wine Spectator rating and classic style put Ringbolt Cab on par with Red Bordeaux costing multiples of its Finewine.com sale price of only $21.98!   Ringbolt Cabernet Sauvignon is the perfect companion to rich hunks of protein- think rib-eye steak and rack of lamb- or, on the vegan/vegetarian side, char-grilled kale and onions, or big cheeses such as cheddar and aged parmesan.  Interestingly, this big wine is produced by a female winemaker, Heather Fraser, who leverages long-standing relationships with top growers in the Cowaramup area of Margaret River.  And while drinking beautifully now, this Cab will remain vibrant for another decade, so lay down a few bottles to enjoy over the next few years.  If you are a fan of Bordeaux but put off by its increasing price, or just a fan of Cabernet Sauvignon in general, don't miss the opportunity to purchase Ringbolt's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon at our current Finewine.com sale price of $21.98!  Cheers mate!
