Every year at this time, a thirsty world clamors for crisp, refreshing, thirst-quenching white wines. Of course, "crisp, refreshing and thirst-quenching" is a near-perfect description of the Vinho Verde wines of northern Portugal. Vinho Verde literally translates as "green wine", a reference not to the wine's color, but to its youth. These vibrant whites are well-known to wine aficionados, but let's be frank- it's not a category that we expect to deliver greatness. But every once in a while, a Vinho Verde stands above the competition, and the 2020 Tiroliro Vinho Verde is such a wine. This great Vinho Vinho Verde is not a grape, but a DOC category for wines, most of which are white and released within 6 months of harvest. As noted, these whites are characterized by a slight effervesce, and while this could be considered a fault in most wines, Vinho Verde's slightly fizzy nature is part of its charm. Tiroliro is a well-known producer of higher-quality wines in this category, and their flagship white is downright inexpensive- the perfect warm-weather wine! Wine & Spirit's tasting notes detail some of Tiroliro's blending magic: "This blend includes Arinto, Avesso, Loureiro, and Trajadura, coming together in crisp and luscious pear and lemon flavors. Crystalline mineral clarity, offering pure Vinho Verde pleasure.” While unfamiliar to most of you, these native grape varieties can achieve tremendous appeal when blended in the right proportions! But while certainly charming, Tiroliro's 2020 Vinho Verde is much more than just that- a 92-point rated Vinho Verde is rare indeed! The winery's description captures some of this white's complexity in describing it as having "...notes of passion fruit and white flowers...", and they rightly emphasize that it "...(pairs beautifully with) fish, seafood and salads." Tiroliro's Vinho Verde pairs perfectly with fish, seafood of all types, lighter foods such as salads, fish tacos and sushi, as well as spicy cuisines such as Thai! This is the perfect summer white- charming, flexible, refreshing, food-friendly, and downright inexpensive!
