Sangiovese is unquestionably one of the greatest wine grapes in the world, source of some of the world’s most acclaimed, distinctive and famous wines. Yet Sangiovese remains less well-known than grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. The reason for its relative obscurity is simple- Sangiovese is more finicky than most illustrious grapes, typically producing great wine only in its ancestral home of Tuscany. In that setting, it is the author of acclaimed wines such as Chianti, Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile de Montepulciano, and of course, Brunello di Montalcino. Sangiovese is also a key component in many of the great “Super Tuscan” wines of Italy. In this class we’ll sample Sangiovese-based wines from throughout Tuscany, but may also have examples from other Italian regions and the New World as well.
